atai Impact established the atai Fellowship Fund in Psychedelic Neuroscience with Massachusetts General Hospital’s Center for the Neuroscience of Psychedelics. The fund will facilitate further research into the potential of psychedelics to address unmet patient needs in mental health and support promising graduate students in furthering their professional careers in this emerging field. Fellows will have access to MGH’s cutting-edge resources and expertise in neuroimaging technologies, cognitive neuroscience, cellular and molecular neurobiology, and clinical trial design. The Fund will enable them to pursue the discovery, optimization, and translation of novel experimental psychedelic neurotherapeutics. The ultimate objective of the Fund will be to investigate and unlock the potential of psychedelics to improve brain health and reduce the burden of mental health conditions.

The company announced a collaboration and licensing agreement with Otsuka Pharmaceutical for the development and commercialization of Perception’s lead molecule, PCN-101 in Japan as a potential treatment for mood disorders such as major depressive disorder and treatment-resistant depression. Otsuka will have exclusive rights to develop and commercialize products containing PCN-101 in Japan. Perception will receive an upfront payment of 20 million USD and will be eligible to receive development, regulatory and commercial milestones as well as tiered, double-digit royalties on future sales.

atai Impact announced the first cohort of the atai Fellowship Fund in Psychedelic Neuroscience at Massachusetts General Hospital Center for the Neuroscience of Psychedelics. The first cohort is comprised of 5 graduate students whose research projects will focus primarily on mechanistic studies of psychedelics and associated therapeutic interventions, including chemical biology approaches to investigate endogenous psychedelic compounds, such as DMT as well as enzymatic machinery required for biosynthesis in an array of both human and rodent cell types, the ethnopharmacology of a Central and South American psychedelic plant, a systems neuroscience approach to the modeling of the brain after the administration of a psychedelic compound, using epidemiological and observational data to explore the potential of psychedelic treatments for addressing suicidal tendencies and behaviors, and the effects of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy on irritable bowel syndrome.
atai Impact donated 500,000 USD to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies to support its work in the psychedelic field.
The company launched Invyxis, a platform committed to developing new chemical entities and to further pioneering next-generation mental health treatments. Invyxis will bring proven medicinal chemistry tools and comprehensive biological screening approaches to atai’s growing enterprise of drug discovery and design. The platform has entered into a strategic collaboration with Dalriada Drug Discovery, specialists in the discovery of small molecule therapeutics. Invyxis will harness a broad array of methods including structure-based design, synthetic chemistry, high-throughput screening, and in vivo characterization. Invyxis’ goal will be to discover new agents with potential in treating mental health disorders, generating NCEs to progress into atai’s research & development pipeline of psychedelic and non-psychedelic compounds. The platform company will initially focus on agonists at the 5-HT2A receptor, recognizing the importance of this key serotonin receptor system in treating a range of mental health disorders.
2024
The company announced a strategic investment in Beckley Psytech giving the company a 35.5% share of ownership. The investment aims to accelerate the development of Beckley Psytech’s two clinical-stage, patent-protected, short-duration psychedelic candidates, BPL-003 and ELE-101, by adding them to atai’s mental health innovation platform.

The company announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted a new patent covering EMP-01 (oral R-MDMA),U.S. patent, No. 12,492,178, includes claims to the drug substance of EMP-01, and is expected to provide exclusivity through 2043. This patent identifies a highly-crystalline, thermodynamically stable HCl salt form of (R)-MDMA with high aqueous solubility and low hygroscopicity, form-specific attributes that are beneficial during formulation development, drug product manufacture, as well as drug substance and drug product storage.
The company was awarded a multi-year, milestone-driven grant worth up to $11.4 million by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
